Wallet, purse or billfold: different words for the same piece
In German there are three words for it: Geldbeutel in Bavaria and Austria, Portemonnaie in the north, Portemonnaie or Geldbörse in Switzerland. In English it's a wallet, a purse or a billfold, depending on where you live. Which size suits you
Size decides two things: how much fits inside and where you carry the wallet. So ask yourself the question the other way round: what do you carry with you every day, and where should it go?
Small: card holders and compact wallets
If you rarely pay cash, a card holder or a small wallet with a press stud is enough. Both fit in a jacket or back pocket and in the smallest handbag. Medium: with coin pocket and room for everyday life
The medium-sized wallet is the compromise most people choose: several card slots, a full-length note compartment and a coin pocket with press stud or zip. Large: with zip all the way round
If loyalty cards, receipts, ID and sometimes even your smartphone need to come along, you need the large format. Here the zip runs around the whole wallet so nothing falls out, even if your handbag tips over. Inside there are noticeably more card slots, often two note compartments and a zipped coin pocket. Frequently asked questions about women's wallets
How many cards fit in a women's wallet?
That depends on the design. A card holder takes up to ten cards, a small wallet about a handful, medium and large styles considerably more, plus a note compartment and coin pocket. The exact number of card slots is listed in each product description.
Does a zip-around wallet still fit in a handbag?
In any normal handbag, yes; in a small evening bag, probably not. If you're often out with a small bag, choose a medium wallet or a card holder as a second wallet.
Press stud or zip on the coin pocket?
The press stud is quicker and flatter. The zip is safer if you carry a lot of coins or the wallet sits loose in your bag. On large wallets, a zip is the rule.
Does the leather need special care?
No. Store it dry, apply a little leather balm now and then, done. What matters more is not overfilling the wallet for long periods, because that strains the seams and the card slots.
Do all styles have RFID protection?
Almost all. Whether a style has the shielding is stated in the product description. The protection only works while the card is inside the wallet.
